Zakynthos
October 2 – 9, 2008
Zakynthos (Zante) is the most southern
of the six Ionian Islands located off western Greece. It is 40km long
and l7km wide with a population of about 45,000. Plenty of rain in
the winter brings green and fertile cropland with lots of wildflowers
and rich vegetation—raisins, olives, vines, and citrus fruits. The
island has a Mediterranean climate of long hot summers and mild spring
and autumn. During the summer months it is a favorite nesting place
of the Loggerhead turtle.
With
the mountains to the north and lush plains to the south, the Ionian
island of Zakynthos offers a wonderful mixture of terrain, flora and
fauna—perfect for a hiking holiday. The island is covered in trails
and paths that weave through olive groves and wooded areas across the
island. Our walks will give you the chance to really see the true charm
of the Greek Ionian Islands—thru small villages, ancient castles, cathedrals,
and monasteries. If you wish to have a view of the island from the
sea, there are boats to be hired for a day at sea.

The aptly named Clear Horizon
Hotel facing the Ionian Sea, a small family run hotel is our base for
the week. Typically Mediterranean the rooms are clean, bright and simple
with modern facilities. The hotel has a pool, bar and restaurant allowing
you to enjoy your evening meals while
looking at the sea. Our lunch stops are at local tavernas along our
way. Honey, yogurt, olives, delicious salads and breads (think fresh!)
are the fare. Our week will be a full experience of the legendary Greek
hospitality!
